Small Business Spotlight: Pointy Faces

g.pngWelcome to our first ever Small Business Spotlight! We have some amazing brands set up to share with you over the coming months, everything from toys to treats, from bandanas to bowls and everything in between! We are kicking off with a company called Pointy Faces who make a variety of organic grooming products, to find out more we caught up with the lady behind the brand, the lovely Megan.

Hi Megan, thank you for joining us today! First thing’s first, what was the inspiration behind Pointy Faces?

It all started with the adoption of my hound Bella. Before adopting Bella, I spent the summer working in Spain which is where I fell in love with sighthounds. The breed has a particularly hard time in Spain and the way they are often treated within the hunting community and racing industry hit home. Whilst in Spain I looked after a Podenco, hearing her amazing story and seeing the amount of love she had to give inspired my partner and I to adopt a sighthound as soon as we were settled. On returning to Wales, we went along to our local council pound. Bella was the third sighthound we were introduced to. As soon as she saw me she launched herself into my arms as if saying ‘choose me’!

Beautiful Bella

Bella was in a bit of a sorry state. She had kennel sores and within a week of adopting her, her damaged tail had to be partially amputated. Once she was settled in, I started to think about washing her but was apprehensive about using conventional chemical filled pet shampoos on her sore skin. I am the operations manager for an organic skin and hair care company (for humans). Many of our customers turn to organic products due to reacting badly to the cheap and harsh ingredients found in many products and I figured why should dogs be any different?

I set about researching ingredients and making my own products for her. With some quality ingredients, soft bedding and a little TLC, I was amazed to see how quickly she healed. You can imagine my delight when she went on to win best condition and best short coat in our local fun dog show! After launching my handmade products, I soon started receiving the most wonderful messages and reviews saying how the products were helping to improve a range of doggie skin and coat issues and Pointy Faces has grown from there.

What makes your products different from other grooming products?

Pointy Faces puts dogs first and would never compromise on quality. My grooming range is designed with dogs in mind and not their humans. I was concerned that without perfumes, colouring and harsh bubbly foaming agents they would not appeal to dog owners. Luckily this has not been the case! I handmake each and every one of Pointy Faces grooming products using the finest ingredients. From organic sweet almond oil to organic, pure essential oils, I will never use cheap alternatives.

Why is it important to you to use such high quality ingredients?

When I was initially researching products for Bella I was shocked at the poor quality and questionable ingredients in dog products which often come from China. I want the best for Bella and I was sure that other dog owners must feel the same. I am a big believer in quality and not quantity. For example, a teaspoon of organic virgin cold press coconut oil will do far more good than a whole jar of cheap supermarket branded coconut oil.

Which is your personal favourite product?

wee.pngThe first product I ever made was an organic neem and lavender shampoo bar designed to soothe, moisturise and condition Bella’s sore skin. Neem is the super hero of ingredients when it comes to dogs as it has so many benefits. Neem can be beneficial when used on fungal infections, insect bites, itchy, sore, dry skin and eczema. This combined with a small amount of organic lavender essential oil which has anti-itch & nerve-calming properties felt like the perfect combination to help improve the condition of her skin. Being the starting point for Pointy Faces and receiving amazing customer feedback about this shampoo bar means that it is still one of my favourite products.

Which items are your best sellers?

ar.jpgIt varies from season to season. This month’s biggest seller is the Limited Edition Grapefruit range. At this time of year, I also receive a lot of orders for the Neem and Lavender shampoo bars and paw and sore balm due to their soothing effects on dogs that suffer from itchy skin due to the summer pollen and grasses. In a few months time, it will be Pointy Faces microfibre towels that are flying off the shelves in preparation for muddy autumn walks.

Anything else you’d like to tell us about Pointy Faces?

Pointy Faces does not only make and sell organic grooming products but also stocks a range of quality, eco-friendly and natural dog care products. A large proportion of these are also handmade. I am very proud to not only be suppling quality products but to also be supporting other small business and talented makers here in the UK.

Doodle Review: Pointy Faces Limited Edition Organic Grapefruit Shampoo and Paw Balm and microfibre towel

Megan very kindly sent us a bottle of her Summer Limited Edition shampoo and paw balm to try out, along with one of her handy microfibre towels. It didn’t take long for us to realise that this only meant one thing. Bath time. As our avid readers will know we aren’t huge fans of baths – we put time and effort into collecting as much dirt as possible in our curly locks and do not appreciate all our hard work being undone! Unfortunately mother ignored our protests and it didn’t take long for us to start rocking the drown rat look. Seriously, fluffy dogs do not look good wet! After our drenching, Mum mixed the shampoo into a jug of water, we thought it was all a bit odd but apparently Pointy Faces shampoos are double concentrated. You mix 50% water and 50% shampoo to make the bottle last twice as long! Immediately noticeable on opening the bottle was the fabulous aroma wafting around the bathroom, this limited edition shampoo is lightly scented with fresh and zesty organic grapefruit essential oil and it smells delightful! The perfect fresh scent for these long summer days. Not only does Pointy Faces shampoo smell fabulous but it’s also very good for our coats, all the ingredients have been specially selected to leave our skin and coat healthy and happy. As a bonus, the moisturising, soothing and hydrating olive and coconut oil means that there is no need to use a dog conditioner after shampooing – less time in the bath sounds good to us! It is worth noting that Pointy Faces does not foam like other pet shampoos, this is because it is free from all the nasty chemicals that cause the foam! Natural ingredients, a beautiful scent and no need for conditioner – does shampoo get any better?! Pointy Faces liquid shampoos retail at £4.95 for a 100ml bottle or £9.95 for 250ml and are available in Unscented, Lavender and Peppermint varieties to suit all skin types, in addition to a couple of limited edition scents released throughout the year (just you wait for their Christmas scents!). Pointy Faces also offer shampoos in bar form, in Unscented, Neem and Lavender, Peppermint and Green Tea and their Limited Edition scents. We find the bars a little more fiddly to use, but they do last an awfully long time and only cost £4.50!

The Limited Editon Organic Grapefruit Paw Balm require a little longer term testing, we’ve been using it a couple of times a week and our paws have never been softer! We have tried a number of different balms before and can safely say we have finally found one to stick with! With the same delightful scent as the shampoo, I think Mum nearly used it on her own skin. The Paw Balm has moisturising and soothing properties and is also handmade using certified organic ingredients including organic coconut oil, organic sheanut butter & organic almond oil. All the ingredients are specially selected to leave your dogs’ paws healthy and happy. The Paw Balm can also be used on other parts of your dogs’ body that may require a little extra moisturising, we’ve been applying a little to Rhapsody’s dry nose and it’s worked wonders! We will definitely be keeping this is our bag for our next beach trip, all the sea and sand causes havoc with our little feet. Pointy Faces Paw Balms are available in all the same varieties as their shampoos and come in 60g or 200g pots, costing £7.95 or £18.95 respectively. It also tastes great but Mum wouldn’t let us eat it! Spoilsport.

The final product we receive from Megan was one of her microfibre towels, Pointy Faces microfibre dog towels are described as “highly efficient at removing moisture and water. They work through capillary action, it absorbs water and moisture, over 4 times as much, compared to conventional cotton towels”. Sounds great right? We put it to the test after our bath, and boy did it reduce the amount of time Mum spent prodding and poking us when we got out! Usually we go through about four or five regular towels per bath, this reduced that number to only two to cover the floor as the microfibre soaked up all the excess water! Mum says we definitely need to get some more and at just £4.95 each, why not! One for the car, one for the back door, one for Grandma’s house, these little towels one of the most useful products we’ve ever found! They also fold up seriously small, perfect for sticking in our bag when we go out on our adventures! The towels are also stain resistant and can be machine washed (and tumble dried) over 500 times at 40 degrees celcius without affecting the unique microfibre towel – perfect for dogs like us that like to get wet and muddy as often as possible!

You can buy all the Pointy Faces products we have reviewed on their website here as well as their range of other gorgeous dog products, our favourites have to be their gorgeous Inca Dog Collars and Green & Wilds treats! You can also keep up with their latest products, offers and cute photos on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
